After retiring, Penelope joined a Beginners’ Botanical Art Class organised by the Bath Society of Botanical Artists.  Discovering her ability to draw, she progressed to the level where she was able to apply to the Royal Horticultural Society for her work to be assessed.  The RHS did accept her work and awarded her the Dawn Jolliffe Botanical Art Bursary.  Shortly after she was invited to exhibit her work at their Annual Exhibition in London where she was awarded the Silver Lindley Medal.
