The RHS London Orchid Show will take place in the Lawrence Hall at the same time as the RHS Botanical Art Show in the Lindley Hall

BSBA member, Penelope Fleming, is exhibiting her latest botanical illustrations of plant galls, in graphite, in the RHS exhibition to be judged for RHS medals.

Penelope writes that her interest in plant galls began whilst observing a grazing giraffe!

'On a trip to Africa in 2008, I witnessed what I believed to be symbiosis between plant and animal.  Grazing giraffe eating leaves from Acacia dreparalobium (The Whistling Thorn) were moved to the next bush, I was to learn later, because aggressive ants living within gall-like structures on these bushes would swarm to bite or squirt formic acid at the giraffe (or indeed any other creature that threatened their home). This action I was assured didn’t hurt the animal, rather it irritated them, but the effect was ultimately one of protection for both themselves and their habitat. Knowing little of plant galls at that time, it started me thinking about the types we might have here in Britain - and so began my quest.'
